Given how the world is today, it seems that many prefer to go the way the world did back in the 1930′s when they believed in Isolationism rather than involvment in the affairs of State or the World really.
Neville Chamberlain stood on a tarmac, proclaiming Peace In Our Time and the world cheered because no one in the free world wanted war with Germany. They didn’t bother to read Hitler’s own tirade of his plans or even pay much attention to it. Instead they thought it was simply for internal consumption, never comprehending that it really wasn’t. It was what he thought and wanted and he set about doing it, and unfortunately for millions of innocent people, the world did nothing.
Just as it is doing now in the Middle East.
Problem is, that eventually what transpires in the Middle East will have an effect in Kansas or Winnipeg or Portsmouth but the solution has never been appeasement at any price. Israel knows that first hand from the survivors of the concentration camps. Too bad the world leaders don’t seem to want to learn from history one bit.
Communist Russia was a threat but to a way of life, harsh yes but not dedicated to the eradication of a race or religion which is what Hezbollah and Hamas desire. In fact, they clearly have stated their goal is to in essence finish Hitler’s Final Solution for the Jews.
So why should that bother Gays?
Well if you look at history you will note that included in Hitler’s regime of murder, Gays and Gypsies were also clear targets for his Gestapo and for filling his death camps. Look today at Iran and you can see how the fundamental religious ones deal with us Gays. They have no room for tolerance, never mind acceptance.
So should we be worried? I think so given the current climate of Hate in the only nation capable of protecting any different group, the United States. With more and more bills coming out to restrict our way of life in the USA, one has to wonder how long it will be before being gay is once more criminal in the USA.
It really isn’t any different than Hitler. He wanted to control the world and to eradicate the Jews who were in his mind ruining the Arayan race and preventing them from having world superiority that he believed was their destiny. No different really than Hezbollah or Hamas, but then Bush, Putin, Chirac and others all know that. But just as Neville Chamberlain did, they are running around Proclaiming Peace In Our Time for their own political reasons. ( see article )
Isolationism is no longer practicle, not as if it ever was. Given that missiles can be fired from anywhere, seems to me that there should be a lot more concern at how these weapons are getting to groups like Hezbollah and Hamas instead of worrying about public perception. Too much talk about Bush on Vacation or Rice and her discussions.
Will history repeat itself? Not if Israel can help it, but what about you? Will you stand up for yourself or will you ignore history and willingly go for a shower?
