Okay, in a way I am perhaps milking this because it is a deeper issue and I don’t actually belive Georgia Tech supports attacks on Gays, but they have caved in to a pending lawsuit by agreeing to allow signs that attack homosexuality.
The issue appears to be that some uptight prudes were prevented from venting their spleen about us Gays due to the Hate Policy of the University. Now isn’t that too bad for them?
The lawsuit alleged that the school policy discriminates against Christian and Jewish students by barring them from speaking out against homosexuality and other issues. ( see 365 story )
Without actually knowing what the policy stated, would seem to me that hate is pretty easy to spot and it should be halted. Words do hurt, but they also incite other actions that aren’t easy to eradicate. Bigotry comes to mind, and Racism is another but I suppose that is okay, as long as some prude can vent about us Queers.
Living in Canada we have a decent Hate Law which is really just common sense. It basically says we can’t go around degrading people like saying they should be all killed or stuff like that. We can’t distort the truth either such as the Neo Nazis try to do about the Holocaust. Seems to work up here pretty well and I suppose that is one reason why we have same sex marraige and the States doesn’t.
It also is just a tool in helping to ease the burden placed on kids and yet it is rather sad at how in the States kids take second place. I mean you hear all the crap about the Republicans and about this religious group and that, insisting on protecting the kids, yet by their intolerance, their rabid words about Gays, they do more damage to kids than any ten pedophiles.
The bullying that goes on is a direct result of this intolerance and if you truly wish to stop it, then Hate Laws are necessary. It has to be shown clearly that hating someone because they don’t meet your standards, is just plain wrong.
Under the agreement reached between the school and the ADF, Georgia Tech agrees to remove the speech provision and withdraw another item of the policy which banned the posting of signs attacking gays and other minorities on university property. ( see 365 story )
Now maybe someone can explain that agreement to me again? I mean they are pissed because they can’t have signs that attack minorities and gays? And that is CIVILIZED?
Course what gets me is that Christianity and Judism both preach love and compassion and charity. In fact they are considered to be precepts of those religions, yet here we are, yelling epitaths and holding hate signs because some are created different than us. How in the hell is that following GOD’s words? Seems rather hypocritical to me but then I am not an American.

[...] It also brings up other issues. For example, if a student stands across from a school, has a banner say Fags are Evil, Need to Be Taught A lesson, can they be held accountable, or will this court rule in favor of such hate literature across from a school? I can see having such stuff ruled on school property, but then one major university settled out of court, allowing such hate propaganda to exist on campus, simply because it was protected under Free Speech. (see comment ‘Georgia Tech Accepts Gay Verbal Attacks‘) [...]
