Lately I have heard a great deal about how Americans are coming around to opposing the battles raging in Iraq. Hell even Lou Dobbs reminds people nightly of the growing death toll over there and yet I wonder, is it the war that is opposed or the lack of guts to see it through that has people defeating candidates who supported the War?
Just weeks ago in nearby Connecticut, another anti-war upstart, Ned Lamont, stunned the political world, defeating Sen. Joe Lieberman in the Democratic primary. Flush with victory, liberal activists and bloggers who helped drive Lamont’s candidacy sought out other prey ( full article )
Frankly I think people need to go back a few years to recall some of the released tapes of Bin Laden and how he foretolled that things might be tough for a year or two, but that America didn’t have the stomach for a protracted battle.
Is he right?
While I think invading Iraq was wrong, I think letting Iraq fall back to dictatorship and worse is even more dispicable than anything Saadam Hussein did during his rule.
Frankly I think Leiberman supports the war on the basis, that you can’t un-invade a nation so you might as well finish what you started. Least that is how I read it, yet its odd, the Democrat Party seems to have forgotten that.
Yes people are dying, but while Americans dying is perhaps at 1 to 2 per day, the Iraqi people are paying with over 100 deaths daily for this Bush invasion. However, I think the issue for me isn’t whether the war was justified or not, I mean like that is over with, it happened and now the world needs to deal with the result.
If American prematurely pulls its troops out, as many Democrats wish, then the loss of nearly 2600 American Lives will have been in vain. The loss of over 3000 Iraqi lives each month will have been in vain, and I wonder, is that the legacy Americans wish to leave in the Middle East?
The ramifications of an early or premature pullout by America is horrendous. If you thought 9/11 was bad, if America pulls out early or doesn’t finish the job at hand, the resulting terror attacks will make 9/11 look like a picnic rainout.
See, not finishing what you start will only empower the Terrorists like Bin Laden and others. It will make him seem almost like a prophet and that is not an easy thing to fight. Just ask the British who fought their fair share in the Middle East long ago. Remember Khartoum?
While the situation in Iraq is going downhill, the upcoming November elections could only make matters worse. If electing spoiled one issue candidates like Lamont is what happens, then terror attacks will not be confined to the streets of Bhagdad, but will start happening all across the United States.
I hate war, but when people don’t want to listen or reason, sometimes it is all there is. When you are in a war, you can’t just toss the gun down and walk away. It just doesn’t work that way and let’s face it, the enemy today is a determined foe.
I think this lack of resolve is what is leading the USA into some perilous waters. Look at how ineffective they are in securing the border even? I mean you would think it would have been a priority after 9/11 and yet here it is, years later and they are just talking about it now? Crazy stuff politics, but somehow I think things will not get better if Democrats win a majority.
There just doesn’t seem to be any guts left. Where is John Wayne when you need him?
