It is amazing but Italy’s cabinet approved a same sex union law. Course that doesn’t make it law, but it is a huge step for the coalition government considering that Herr Pope is opposed to it, as is the opposition parties. To think that a group of nine different political parties could come together is in itself a small miracle. To think they did this while considering something like same sex rights, is a major miracle.
That Prodi was able to secure cabinet approval is considered a major accomplishment. A loose coalition of nine small parties, his government has been grappling with civil partnerships for moths. Communists on the the far left of the coalition have been pressing for full marriage. The tiny UDEUR Party is opposed to any legislation. (story)
Frankly it might just come down, to whether or not the Italians are willing to be ruled by its elected officials or the Dictator in the-Vatican. I just don’t understand what it is about all this that has Herr Pope and others like him upset. Is it that they fear we will somehow make marriage less respectful? I mean hell doesn’t a near 60% divorce rate already do that? Doesn’t no fault divorce, or my favorite one, the annulments by the RC Church. I mean people can get married, have kids, grand kids even and if they pay enough cash to the diocese, they can have 20 and 30 year marriages annulled. Like that isn’t a mockery in itself?
