There certainly is a great deal of talk about how important the conservatives are in determining who will be the next President, and specially who will carry the Republican Banner. Frankly I don’t get it.
First off, I believe fiscal restraint is in everyone’s best interest, no matter your political stripe, so that can’t be the reason these hijackers are so important. I call them hijackers simply because in my mind, they are far from being conservatives. As I was told that us Queers had co-opted the word ‘Gay’ I am of the opinion that the Racists have co-opted the designation ‘conservative’.
So why are so many political candidates so determined to get cozy with these people?
They are considered the most serious contenders for the Republican nomination. But conservatives are questioning their credentials and aren’t sold on any of them. Thus, several other lesser-known candidates like Huckabee are hoping to emerge as strong challengers by capturing the backing of that critical part of the GOP base. (story)
I would think that any election, specially a Presidential One, should be about policy, about issues and not pandering to some group. I guess if you want to win you have to, but what is the cost? I mean look around at people like Bush or Harper or Blair even.
While they courted and got the ‘hijackers’ vote, what did it accomplish? Did it evolve a comprehensive foreign policy or did it lead to mayhem and war? Harper is all gung-ho for aiding Bush in Iraq, and yet now Blair is abandoning him. Bush is still headstrong about pushing forward, but what is the goal?
True conservatives aren’t about invasion or occuppation either. True conservatives aren’t about exclusion or about curtailing basic civil human rights. Yet that is exactly what these so called ‘conservatives’ adhere to. Put a white sheet on them, and they wouldn’t skip a beat. They holler patriotism and use it like a club, they holler reglious freedom then try to jam it down everyone’s throat.
How in hell is that being a conservative?
