There was an article about how Senator Barack Obama is not making himself available to the GLBT Media, as much as he is to the Mainstream Media. In fact one gay publication printed a blank page, to protest their inability to get time with the popular Politician.
So even as the Obama campaign held out the possibility of an interview before the April 22 Pennsylvania primary, Segal published a half-blank front page to represent what he described in an editorial as Obama’s “disrespect of the LGBT [Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender] local media.” (source)
Talk about being arrogant.
Not to mention, that such tactics are exactly the type of play that the Homophobic Society relishes. It is this type of move, this type of whining, that has many non gays ignoring the rights of Gays, or moving towards Politicians like Mitt Romney or Mike Huckabee.
Bit childish if you ask me, though no one did. We are not a huge voting bloc, and we aren’t about to make a difference in the outcome either. Sure, we want our complaints listened to, have our concerns voiced to who may become the Next President, but this whining, is just playing into the hands of the Religious Right. It gives them, just one more weapon to use against any chance we might have in winning equality.
This is a game of getting the votes. It really is simple math. The GLBT Society isn’t a huge voting bloc, now is it? On the other hand, the African American Bloc or the Latino Bloc, or even the so called Religious Bloc carry a lot more Clout. And let us be fair, while it would be nice to get in and schmooze with who might be the first Black President, it doesn’t register on the Important Scale very much.
Senator Obama is the only candidate who spoke out for Gay Rights, for the repeal of the infamous Clinton Legislation of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Funny how the press forgets some of the major legislations that Clinton supported, that are so offensive to Gays, yet you sure don’t hear them calling her on it. They don’t whine about access to Hilary or in getting a DEFINITIVE ANSWER from her, just that they are having trouble getting interviews with Barack Obama.
With all of the influence, the access to Hilary Clinton, has the Mathew Shepard Bill become law yet? How about the hold up on the Ryan White Bill by Senator Clinton, in order to get Californian Delegate support before allowing it to pass?
