A Canadian outfit has submitted its HIV vaccine for human trials, in the United States.
Being Canadian, the second thing that hit me, was why is the vaccine being tested under FDA guidelines, and not being followe thru up here. The FIRST thing that hit me, is will this actually work, and how long until it becomes available.
Dozens of HIV vaccines have already been developed and tested in animal models, but few have been tested in humans, none successfully. A promising trial in 2007 by pharmaceutical giant Merck and Co. was shut down after those receiving the vaccine contracted HIV at a higher rate than those who received the placebo. ( CBC News )
Hopefully this one will have better results.
My issue is the total commercialization of these vaccines. I also wonder at the integrity of testing, and of the manufacturing process. Lately, many life saving drugs have been faced with recalls, thanks to the bottom line of these Drug Companies.
Perhaps, the testing shouldn’t just extend to whether the drug works or not, but to the facilities where the drug is mass produced? I mean, take a look at Heparin, that had many recalls this last year. A vital drug, to prevent blood clotting, and it turns out the source is from CHINA?
Globalization is one thing, but isn’t it about time we started producing products that did as advertised, and maintained a close eye on those items, that have a direct impact on whether a person lives or dies? I mean syringes pre filled, that are contaminated? Those aren’t accidents, that is sloppy safety procedures, anyway you cut it.
I would love to see an HIV vaccine, but again, will it be even affordable for everyone, or will it be only for those who can pay for it? Another example of how some have perverted Capitalism. I support a free and open market system, believe in the concept of getting top dollar for goods, but I also believe we have an obligation to those who aren’t flush with cash.
