Majority Rules, or so it is proclaimed, but when it comes to Governments, is that really how it works? I mean the Australian Government of Mr. Rudd has a majority, but was elected by a real majority, and is any government truly elected by a real majority?
Fact is, NO, no government is elected by an actual clear majority, so they have to rely on special interest groups, to hold onto power, and unfortunately, across the world, the religious right are fairly powerful. They manage to get their supporters out, and worse, to vote the way they suggest (for the most part) which is why we get people like George W. Bush & Stephen Harper & Mr. Rudd.
And yet, in a Constitutional Monarchy System, like Australia, like Canada, the rights of the minorities still manages to poke a hole through, even when it comes to same sex marriage. While the compromise in Australia is far less than ideal, at least it moves the cause for EQUAL RIGHTS a bit closer, unlike in a Republic System, like the United States.
The centre-left government has, however, promised to change taxation, pension and welfare laws to ensure they do not discriminate against gays and lesbians. More than 40,000 of Australia’s 21 million people live with a partner of the same gender, the government says. ( CBC News )
It still amazes me, that so many continue to confuse the concept, that under a national law of marriage, it is the civil aspect that is binding on all citizens. What one attains in their religious order, is not necessarily valid within the civil constrains of their system. Yet when it comes to same sex mariage, somehow these religious zealots believe that what their ‘religious beliefs’ are, should hold everyone hostage.
I have been legally married for 5 years, this January, and you know, it hasn’t impacted one single religious right person who opposes such a union. It hasn’t created one single divorce among them, nor has it stopped them from loving their opposite sex spouse, so why the fuss? It makes no sense, because truth is, if I am supporting same sex marriage, in the eyes of THEIR GOD, I am doomed anyhow, because I engage in same gender sex. So what, by denying me the abilityto marry, civilly, it will suddenly save me?
I DON’T THINK SO.
