According to a new Angus Reid poll of 1000 American Voters, FORTY SEVEN PER CENT of our Southern Neighbours believe that being Gay is a choice people make. Not far behind, was 46% who opposed same sex marriage rights for Gays. Like that is a surprise? NOT! (see here for more)
The Religious Right are pretty damn good at confusing the issue, and mixing their religious bias, with the facts. It is really simple, whether you think being gay is a choice or not, fact is that a minority is being denied the same civil rights that you enjoy. AND THAT IS WRONG!
To begin with, the rights of any citizen cannot be denied to any segment of the population, merely because the majority do not approve of that minority, or of whether it is an act of nature, or not.
By granting ALL CITIZENS EQUALITY under the law, INSURES RELIGIOUS FREEDOM & DEMOCRACY. Despite the rhetoric of the wing nuts who think that letting us queers marry will infringe on their religious beliefs, is just poppycock. By denying us that right, they endanger their own rights for religious freedoms. Think about it, what happens if a majority of citizens suddenly opt out of Christianity for some other religion, that looks disparagingly on Christianity? Such as in the days of Christ, when the Romans believed in many different Gods, and were afraid of Christians, calling it a sect, a cult, and so made them into a food for exotic animals.
THINK ABOUT YOUR HISTORY BEFORE YOU DENY ME EQUAL RIGHTS.
And while we are on this topic, let’s look at what really is a choice, and what isn’t. I can choose to believe in God or Not, plus if I do choose to believe in HIM, I get to choose which type of GODI want to follow. I can become Catholic, Protestant, Anglican, Lutheran, and on the list goes. I can choose to believe in God according to Islam, or Judaism. IN OTHER WORDS I GET TO CHOOSE IF I WANT TO BELIEVE IN GOD.
Now, while some are definitely masochistic, and like being humiliated, enjoy living a secret life, and being attacked at a whim, the majority really don’t enjoy that stuff. Most Gays do not want to be ostracized, be forced to live a secret life, or forced to conform to a norm, in order to keep a job, or even serve their country in the Armed Forces. They do so, because THEY HAVE NO CHOICE IN THEIR ORIENTATION.
Just as those who are African American have no choice in the color of their skin, Gays have no choice in their orientation. We just can hide it better, which doesn’t make any less a reality or an act of nature.
