Why Are We Surprised?
IF you ever follow some of those news tweeters, it seems they are constantly showing posts or articles, about who is opposing Gay Rights across the world. They talk constantly about those groups that are taking out ads, to try and persuade people to vote against Gay Rights, such as Same Sex Marriage, and we all act so surprised at it all.
Okay, maybe not surprised, but disappointed and exasperated by it all, and yet, why?
I mean just because they may have failed in one area, doesn’t mean they are going to give up, otherwise, where would our own march towards equality be today? There would be NO marriage laws passed, NO civil union accords, so why do we expect those who oppose our rights, to simply cave in?
YES it is inevitable, but many, including us, can’t always see that, can we? Maybe if we did, we might not have continued to push for the rights we have now, or are slowly obtaining. Perhaps the truth is, they have the resources and we are apparently unwilling to spend, or use, our own vast resources, to fight back. This is not a sprint, this is a war, to achieve and hold onto our basic Civil Rights. It doesn’t just stop, once we gain the rights, as history has shown, many will continue to fight to rescind those rights, to take them away.
George Bush did amazing work, in making people afraid. It has resulted in many basic human rights being given up, so no, the challenge will always exist, and we need to keep that in mind, next time they come calling for donations, or for letters to the editor. We cannot rest on our victories, because that only spurs the enemy on.
