All Talk or the Real Deal?
Is President Barack Obama, just talk & show, or is he the real deal, when it comes to supporting equal rights for everyone, including the GLBT society? When he campaigned, & claimed to be a champion for equal rights, for everyone, including Gays & Lesbians, people believed him, and supported his bid for the Presidency, but can he, and will he, deliver?
After all, he did invite gay families to join in the Easter Egg hunt at the White House, something that is symbolic of support, but does it have any real meaning? Does it signal a change in White House policy support for equal right laws, for the Mathew Shepard Hate Crime Legislation, for the repeal of DADT, for the repeal of DOMA?
Inclusively and diversely and with great tolerance, Barack Obama invited a few dozen homosexual couples, with their children, to the annual Easter egg roll at the White House on the weekend. ( source – CBC News )
The PR value might be good, but is it enough? Will that translates into continued GLBT support for him, and for the Democratic Party, come the next election cycle?
I mean Bill Clinton made a lot of promises, was the great hope for GLBT rights, or so everyone thought, and yet it was Bill Clinton who signed into law, not just DADT, but the Defence of Marriage Act, known as DOMA. You know, the act that defines marriage between only a man and woman.
Now I can accept, that there are some pressing issues facing the newly elected President, but I wonder, can he really change Congress, to the point where he can get things, like DADT & DOMA repealed? Can he get the Mathew Shepard Act passed? Yes, he is the President, but he doesn’t pass legislation, he can only ASK for it to be done, and sure, most of the time they accept his wishes, but somehow, issues relating to us Gays, seems to not be the kind, that people are willing to just say: ” sure Mister Prez “ to.
I guess then, the question shouldn’t be, on whether he will get those issues dealt with, but instead is… WILL HE ASK FOR THEM TO BE CONSIDERED BY CONGRESS & SUPPORT IT?
