Homosexuality more Acceptable?
A recent poll shows a sharp rise in the number of people who believe that Openly Gay People should be allowed to serve in the US Military. The Poll cites many changes in the results, for the so called perception of Gays, or the Homosexual LIfestyle, that includes whether openly gay teachers should be allowed. And it appears, according to the poll, that it is across the political spectrum, from Republicans, Democrats, and Independents.
Today, Americans have become more supportive of allowing openly gay men and women to serve in the armed forces. Support from Republicans has doubled over the past 15 years, from 32 to 64 percent. More than eight in 10 Democrats and more than three-quarters of independents now support the idea, as did nearly two-thirds of self-described conservatives. (source – MSNBC News)
On the surface, it does seem like things are improving, but if this is the case, why is Being Gay or Supporting Gay Rights still a major political weapon for the Republicans? I mean if this poll is true, why is DADT still in effect?
Why is the Mathew Shepard Act still in limbo, under threat of a Veto, if so many are more accepting of Gays?
Perhaps the issue isn’t that the Polls are right, or wrong, but that we place way too much emphasis on them, without even knowing just what is being asked. After all, how you ask something can determine the response, so is it that Americans are being more accepting of Homosexuality, or is it the question is misleading, creating an erroneous answer? Or are people answering the way they are, because they PERCEIVE that is how they should answer?
Proof is in the actions, and frankly, it seems that while they may SAY they are more understanding, more accepting, the actions say otherwise.
